Wondering what to do on a Saturday night, especially THIS Saturday night? Tonight, March 25th, is the 10th annual observance of Earth Hour, a time when people all over the world turn their lights off from 8:30-9:30 PM, local time. You can sign up at the website to pledge your participation and then #ChangeClimateChange by this simple action – turning off your lights for an hour. People in over 7,000 cities and 24 time zones participate.

So, what can you do in a hour in the dark? Well, as a sexologist, I can think of quite a few things that would be fun, ranging from the sensual to the x-rated! But first, you might want to stock up on candles, and make sure they are out of reach of curious children and pets when they are lit.

The following suggestions are meant for consenting adults who have made explicit consensual agreements for participation.

One. Tantric Gazing by candlelight. Here’s a video with basic instructions. This can be terribly romantic and emotionally intimate. Enhance your experience with soft instrumental music, and perhaps a pot of tea and some chocolate for nibbling between gazing sessions.

Two. Give and Receive Erotic Massage. This is pretty self-explanatary, but if you need suggestions, instructions, or ideas, you can find plenty of instructional videos here at the New School of Erotic Touch. You can study up before the lights go off!

Three. Create a “Sensorium.” Before the lights go off, you can arrange collections of non-visual sensory experiences – smells, tactile sensations, audible sensations, taste – and take turns playing guessing games or perhaps other kinds of games that involve a range of sensory experiences! Caution: don’t use chemical fragrances – some people have asthma and other medical problems when exposed, or just don’t like them. Stick to flowers, spices, or very light use of incense (if tolerated and enjoyed). Share and experience different types of touch. Be creative with fruit, chocolate, beverages, fabrics, sex toys and implements from your toy box, lotions, music, singing, words or non-vocal sounds… be creative, use a light touch (for starters, in any case), and always get consent first!

Four: Tell Stories in the Dark. From ghostly to erotic, what could be more fun than hiding under the covers with your lover(s) and telling your own tall tales? Use your imagination or retell something you remember from your childhood.

Five: Erotic Hypnosis. Take turns putting yourself and your partner(s) in trance for fantasy and sensation play! Here’s a video about the benefits of erotic hypnosis, and if you want a short script, email me at dr.amymarshsexologist@gmail.com before 4 PM Hawai’i time. You can read it by candlelight, if you must!

Six. Go Outside, Cuddle, and Look at the Stars. Tonight is a waning crescent moon, only 9% of it will visible, so it will be pretty dark if you are in an area without much street lighting. The night sky can be a profound experience. Let it remind you of the preciousness of life on this planet, and the people who are in your life, including your lover(s).

Seven. Make a Date to Enjoy Sex. Sounds simple and obvious, doesn’t it? So why not make a date for whatever kind or variety that pleases you and your partner(s)?

There! I am sure you can think of many other ideas for enjoying an hour without electric illumination! Send me some of your ideas and maybe I’ll include them in my next blog!

Happy Earth Hour!
