Quote from Newsweek Today article: “In the U.S., 85 percent [of those murdered] were Native American trans women or trans women of color.”

The statistics may disagree, depending on source, but they are all shocking and tragic. Another quote from the same article says: “Information from the HRC says that 91 percent of the trans women killed in the U.S. throughout 2019 were black. Over 80 percent of the victims were under the age of 30. Out of all the murders reported, 68 percent of the victims lived in the American south.”

Read the names of the murdered victims here.

It’s so easy for me to sit here and add links to a blog, to help broadcast awareness. But today I did something different. I lit a candle and read every single name aloud. It took about an hour. Here is the recording below. You can listen, but better yet, read the names aloud yourself.

Trans and gender diverse people live with the gut punch of these names and deaths every day. Those of us who consider ourselves somewhere along the spectrum of “allyship” should be living with that too, so we do better.

I pledge to step up my game.
